A multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Whitby Monday night has left four people dead including two grandparents and an infant.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario's police watchdog, said a stolen vehicle being pursued by Durham Regional Police lost control, crossed the median and struck multiple vehicles in the eastbound lanes.

Two grandparents and their infant grandchild were among the four people killed, the SIU said. A fourth victim, a woman in her 20s, was driving one of the vehicles that was struck and died at the scene.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Highway 401 near Thickson Road. The highway was closed for several hours while police investigated.

The SIU said it has assigned six investigators and two forensic investigators to the case. The agency is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage to contact them.
