Learn Shotokan Karate's Basic Two-Technique: WEB Soto Uke Gyaku Zuki
Breaking Down the Technique
Step 1: WEB Soto Uke Gyaku Zuki
Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent. Raise your hands to shoulder height with your palms facing out. Perform a Soto Uke (outward block) with your left arm, followed by a Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch) with your right arm.
Step 2: Gedan Barai Stepping
As you execute the punch, step forward with your left foot and perform a Gedan Barai (lower block) with your right arm. This move targets the opponent's legs.
Step 3: Soto Uke Gyaku Zuki Gedan Barai
Repeat the sequence, this time starting with a Soto Uke on your right side and Gedan Barai on your left. The rotation of your hips and the coordination of your arms and legs is crucial for effective execution.
Step 4: Age Uke Gyaku Zuki
For a variation, perform an Age Uke (rising block) with your left arm, followed by a Gyaku Zuki with your right. This rising block helps defend against an opponent's upper-body attacks.
