Early Life and Education
Antony John Blinken was born on April 16, 1962, in Yonkers, New York. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University Law School.
Political Career
Blinken began his political career as a staff member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He later served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs during the Clinton administration.
Obama Administration
Blinken played a key role in the Obama administration, serving as Deputy National Security Advisor from 2013 to 2015 and National Security Advisor from 2015 to 2017. In these roles, he was instrumental in shaping U.S. foreign policy on a wide range of issues, including the Iranian nuclear deal and the Paris climate agreement.
Secretary of State
President Biden nominated Blinken as Secretary of State on November 23, 2020. He was confirmed by the Senate on January 26, 2021, and has since led the State Department and represented the United States abroad.
