Champai Soren Becomes Jharkhand's New Chief Minister
After Hemant Soren's Resignation
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Elects Senior Minister as Legislative Party Leader
In a significant political development, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has elected Champai Soren as its new legislative party leader. The move comes after the resignation of Hemant Soren as Chief Minister of Jharkhand following an election commission order barring him from the post due to a mining lease allotment case.
Champai Soren, a five-time MLA, earned the nickname "Jharkhand Tiger" while playing an active role in the statehood movement. He is a veteran JMM leader and has been associated with the party founder, Shibu Soren, for decades.
The decision to elect Champai Soren has been unanimously accepted by the ruling coalition, including the Congress. His elevation as the legislature party leader is expected to pave the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
Champai Soren's swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, February 2, 2024. He is expected to lead the state for the remaining period of the current assembly term, which ends in December 2024.
