Coons Breaks the News as Biden is Evacuated After Shooting

Senator Raises Concerns About the President's Future

Delaware senator Chris Coons, a long-time confidant of Joe Biden and the co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, spoke to CBS News earlier today about the president's decision to end his reelection campaign.

According to Coons, Biden made the decision after weeks of "hand-wringing" and concerns about his age and the toll of the presidency on his health. Coons said that Biden was "deeply saddened" to make the decision, but that he felt it was in the best interests of the country.

The news of Biden's decision came just hours after he was evacuated from a campaign event after a shooting. Biden was hustled out of the building, a black baseball hat over his shock of white hair, to receive word that his predecessor, Donald Trump, had been shot.

Coons said that the shooting had a "profound impact" on Biden and that it was a factor in his decision to end his campaign. He said that Biden was shaken by the incident and that it had made him realize that he could no longer put himself and his family through the rigors of a presidential campaign.
